If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between general and cosmetic dentistry, then this is the blog for you. Many dental practices offer a mix of general and cosmetic dentistry services, while others may concentrate on general dentistry only or specialise in one or more areas of cosmetic dentistry, e.g. orthodontic treatment (teeth straightening) or dental implants.
As a rough guide, general dentists are concerned with making sure that your mouth is as healthy as it can be. They will carry out routine check-ups, possibly have a dedicated hygienist and carry out preventative work to keep you orally fit.
A cosmetic dentist, on the other hand, will offer restorative treatments designed to improve the appearance of your smile. This might mean straightening crooked teeth, replacing missing teeth, whitening dark teeth or rebuilding damaged teeth. In many cases, several treatments can be combined to makeover a smile.
At the Dental Health Centre in Lincolnshire, we offer both general and cosmetic dentistry treatments. Our cosmetic dentistry treatments include:
A dental crown (sometimes called a ‘cap’) is a restoration that can be fitted to sit on top of a damaged or heavily filled tooth. It can be carefully colour matched and shaped to blend with your surrounding teeth, giving you a result that looks completely natural. at the Dental Health Centre we can make crowns while you wait in about an hour.
A dental bridge, as the name suggests, is a restoration that spans between two teeth to fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. As with dental crowns, dental bridges can be perfectly colour matched and shaped to restore your natural smile.
Veneers are wafer thin shells, usually made of porcelain, that are bonded to the front of your teeth to create the appearance of a flawless smile. You can have just one veneer fitted or many, depending on your individual case. Far from looking like a whiter than white ‘Hollywood’ smile, we will perfectly match your veneers to your other teeth to ensure that they look completely natural.
Veneers are ideal if you have stained, chipped or crooked teeth, or your teeth has lost some of their natural enamel.
Many people initially seek out a cosmetic dentist in Lincolnshire because they want white, natural looking and mercury-free fillings instead of teeth full of metal amalgam. Not only do white fillings look natural, making it hard for people to spot that you’ve had dental treatment, but they are also inert with no associated health risks. In addition, they tend to result in less sensitivity than traditional amalgam fillings.
Teeth whitening is a popular treatment choice for people who visit a cosmetic dentist. Both at-home and in-clinic whitening treatments can whiten your teeth by several shades, immediately making your smile look healthier, younger and with fewer imperfections. Teeth whitening can be a massive confidence booster and is a popular treatment with brides-to-be, as well as people in public-facing roles or who simply want to feel better about their rejuvenated smile.
Dentures are one of the most affordable ways to replace missing teeth and, these days, there is a wide range of options available. You might need full upper and/or lower dentures, partial dentures or implant-retained dentures, which are growing in popularity because they anchor your dentures in one place throughout the day.
In the hands of a skilled cosmetic dentist, dentures can be crafted to perfectly fit your mouth and give you a great deal of confidence that they will stay in position as you go about your day.
Many view dental implants as the ultimate restorative dental treatment for a missing tooth or teeth; they are only available through suitably trained and experienced cosmetic dentists. At the Dental Health Centre, Mr Sutton has been placing and restoring dental implants for the last 15 years with many hundreds of implants successfully placed. Dental implants work by replacing a missing root with a special titanium post, on to which we fit a device called an ‘abutment’ and, finally, a prosthetic tooth. Although in some cases implants and a temporary crown or bridge can be placed on the same day, more typically this procedure tends to take several months, it doesn’t require us to damage your surrounding healthy teeth, and enables us to restore the bite, function and appearance of your smile to an extent that other restorations can’t offer.
If you feel that any of these treatments can help you feel good about your smile, and restore both its health and appearance, contact our cosmetic dentists in Lincolnshire at the Dental Health Centre on 01476 594480 and we will be happy to arrange an appointment to discuss your options.
