All about denture implants

Do you have multiple missing teeth yet are frustrated by the limitations and unreliability of your denture? Lots of people are shying away from dentures in 2019, and now you can achieve more permanent tooth replacement with Dental Health Centre Grantham.

All about the implant-retained denture

An implant-retained denture is a type of denture that is supported and fixed in place by dental implants. A regular denture sits on the gums and is fixed with often unpleasant tasting and messy denture glue, but implant dentures don’t require this. It has special attachments that fix onto the attachments on the implants, so you can still remove them to clean them but enjoy all of the permanence and reliability while eating, chewing, and talking.

Bar-retained dentures

We highly recommend bar-retained denture implants because they are more secure and stable. They feel more like your natural teeth as chewing forces are transmitted through the implants, giving you much more confidence in your day to day life. Bar-retained dentures use a thin metal bar that follows the curve of your jaw and is attached using two to five implants placed in your jawbone. Clips are then attached to the implants and possibly the dentures too. The denture then fits over the bar and is secured using these attachments, making them easy to take out and put in.

Benefits of denture implants

  • The freedom of diet. You no longer have to change your diet and menu choices to accommodate for slippery, unpredictable dentures. You can crunch and chew with confidence and limit yourself to softer, blander foods.
  • No more glue. Denture glue has earned a reputation for being unpleasant tasting and unpleasant feeling, with its messiness and sometimes leaking. With denture implants, there’s no need for glue when your implants are fixed.
  • Fixed confidence. There’s no more slips and no more embarrassing moments when your dentures suddenly come loose in your mouth. The implant dentures are reliable and secure, meaning that there won’t be any unexpected slips during conversation.
  • Less material in your mouth. Implant dentures for your upper jaw can be made to cover less of your palate, the roof of your mouth. It doesn’t need the added support of the palate roof because the implants are holding it in place.

The treatment process

Everyone’s treatment journey is unique to them, but this is how we place the implants once you have received your consultation, x-ray results, and the necessary preparation steps are completed. The implants are usually placed in the jawbone at the front of your mouth because this is where the bone is denser. Typically, two appointments of minor surgery are needed for this procedure. The first places the implants in the jawbone under your gums, the second comes around 6 months after this to ensure your first surgery has healed. We then expose the top of the implants and fit the dentures on top. If you’ve just invested in a new set of dentures but are already finding you’d prefer a more permanent option, then we can work with this and potentially create implant dentures out of your existing set.
