White Fillings: FAQ Part 1

Whether you’re considering white fillings treatment here in Grantham, or you’ve already had it carried out, our dedicated blog post can help answer some of those common questions. Read on to find out more about the process, results and troubleshooting, as well as how to book in with our private dentists here at our Grantham dental practice.

Why do I need a filling?

Fillings – whether a white filling or other material, like amalgam – can restore the appearance and function of a tooth that’s developed a cavity (hole). Tooth decay is incredibly common, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. If left untreated, it can cause infection, which can be both painful and serious.

Can fillings break?

Of course, but there are steps you can take to prevent this. For example, wearing a mouth guard during contact sports; avoiding crunching on foods such as hard candies or nuts; and curbing bad habits such as nail-biting and pen-chewing. Most of the time, a broken white filling isn’t an emergency, but of course it should be replaced by our expert private dentists as soon as practicable.

What aftercare is involved?

Like any fillings, white fillings require a good oral hygiene routine to ensure they stand the test of time. With good care, they may well last a number of years. Another part of the aftercare process is regular check-ups with your private dentist. Immediately after white filling treatment, we recommend eating soft foods only and managing any temporary pain or sensitivity with over-the-counter products such as paracetamol.

Does treatment hurt?

Our white filling treatment uses tooth-coloured restorations for a small filling, or our state-of-the-art Cerec machine for larger, porcelain fillings – with either treatment completed in a day. An anaesthetic can be offered to help numb the area ahead of the procedure, which will gradually wear off.
