What can you eat with dental implants?
Dental implants are replacement teeth that are anchored to your gun by fusing the titanium root of the implant with your jawbone, and they’ve never been so popular in Grantham, Lincolnshire. The process that fits them is an invasive one, which involves opening the gums to place the implant and then waiting for the gums to heal again before a permanent, natural looking crown can be added.
New Dental Implant Friendly Foods
At this time, you may find that you prefer to limit yourself to a diet consisting of softer foods. This won’t be a permanent change to your diet, but rather a temporary adjustment until your implants feel like, and can be used in the same way, as your natural teeth. Let’s have a look at some of the foods you might choose to use in your meal recipes, which we know will not cause you any unnecessary discomfort.
- Mashed potato dishes such as cottage pie, or fish pie, are soft enough to be eaten with implants.
- If you have pasta or rice, you might choose to overcook it slightly, to ensure it’s soft enough to be easy to chew.
- All manner of soups are easy enough to eat, so should you be struggling to incorporate crunchy vegetables into your diet, you could consider softening them and blending them into a soup.
- Fruit smoothies and juices are a great way to ensure you get your five a day, no matter what the texture.
- Breakfast foods you can continue to enjoy are scrambled eggs on soft bread and baked beans, as well as porridge or yoghurt.
- A jacket potato with cottage cheese makes for a very quick, convenient lunch, but you’ll probably have to leave the skin.
- As for treats, there is no reason why you should give up ice cream, jelly and soft puddings.
As soon as your implants have healed and your mouth feels comfortable enough to start tackling crunchier food, you can begin to introduce different textures into your diet. Your Grantham dentist will provide you with a list of food you’ll need to avoid initially, but as implants are strong and designed to mimic natural teeth, it won’t be long before you’re enjoying all your favourite foods again.
Post Treatment Aftercare
Once you’ve had the implant placed in our Grantham practice and your gums have healed, the benefits of having this prosthesis will be obvious. You’ll have the confidence to smile widely, a confidence in your ability to eat what you like and the confidence to speak clearly.
However in the interim period, the week or two immediately after the placement of the dental implant, and perhaps even directly after the fitting of the permanent crown, 3 to 6 months later, you will still be getting used to the sensation of having the dental implant in your mouth. Your gums may be slightly tender and you’ll be in the process of customising your mouth to the feeling of having a tooth where previously there was a gap.
