Retention
Congratulations! You have finished your
orthodontic treatment and your braces can be taken off.
However when orthodontic treatment has been completed
there is a great tendency for the teeth to relapse towards
their pre-treatment position. The majority of treatment
results will be maintained. We do not expect your
straightened teeth to remain exactly in the same position
as before the braces were removed.
It is important to appreciate that tooth position is
not static but dynamic - constantly adapting to an ever
changing environment.
There are two types of retainer provided
to maintain the position of your teeth:
Removable
These are generally worn on a full time basis, for a
minimum of 6 months. They must be removed for meals
and must be removed for tooth brushing, contact sports
and swimming. After this initial 6 month period the
retainers should be worn for 6 months at night time
and then on a long-term basis to keep the teeth straight.
If you cannot wear your retainer for any reason, please
contact the Practice immediately. Your retainers
are very important.
Fixed or Bonded Retainers
These are fitted behind the front teeth to prevent relapse
of spacing or significant rotations. Fixed retainers
are usually required for at least 18 months and ideally
left for up to seven years. You should avoid biting
into hard foods that may damage them.
If your fixed retainer breaks or comes loose, please
let us know immediately. If you have a removable
retainer as well, this should be worn over the fixed
retainer until you can be seen at the surgery.
Caring for your retainers
Keeping your retainers clean with a toothbrush and toothpaste
is very important. In addition “Retainer Brite”
can be purchased from our reception desk. These
effervescent cleansing tablets will keep your retainers
fresh and bright.
As well as thorough tooth brushing, flossing of your
teeth is recommended. Thread super floss or TeePee brushes
beneath the fixed retainer so that the gums are kept
in a healthy condition.
What happens if I have a problem?
The fee to repair, or replace a broken fixed retainer
is between £40 and £160. The fixed retainer is
guaranteed for one year.
Now that your teeth are nice and straight don't forget
to get a new gum shield made, especially if you play
any contact sports!
