Head Gear

This is a very important part of your treatment.  It may take a week or so to get used to wearing it, but after that you should experience no problems.  Start by wearing the headgear for 3 to 4 hours a day for the first few days, but as soon as possible, wear it all the time that you are indoors and all through the night.

Fill in your Diary every day so that we can monitor your progress.  Aim to wear the headgear for a MINIMUM of 12 hours every day, and ideally achieve an average of 14 hours per day or 98 hours per week.

Your teeth will probably be tender for a few hours in the morning and you may have marks on your cheeks. These will go after an hour or two.

Bring your headgear to every appointment.  Please phone for an earlier appointment if you are unable to wear it.

Warning

  • Do not play active games whilst wearing it;
  • Do not let anybody interfere with it when you are wearing it;
  • Always hold the face bow firmly at the front when connecting the head cap.
  • ALWAYS follow the Orthodontist’s instructions when wearing your headgear.  Do not allow anyone to pull you by your headgear.
  • Remove the head cap BEFORE the inner bow.  Never remove or fit headgear in one piece by pulling the headgear over the face or head.  Do not attempt to remove the headgear in any way other than that shown to you by your orthodontist.
  • Make sure that you know the proper way to remove the headgear. If you experience any problems or have any questions when you should or should not wear the headgear, please contact the Practice.
  • If ANY part of the appliance becomes detached during sleep,  STOP wearing the headgear and contact your Orthodontist.
  • Do not use your headgear when playing sports or engaging in any strenuous activity.
  • All adjustments to your face bow and headgear are to be made by your Orthodontist only.
