Functional Braces

Your functional appliance may be made up of two removable braces or one 'double brace'.  The lower jaw should be postured forwards and closed so that the bite blocks engage.  The braces must be worn all day, including meal times, and all night. They must be removed for tooth brushing, contact sports and swimming.

If there is a screw in the middle of the upper brace, this should only be turned as instructed by your orthodontist (usually once a week).

If you have headgear, this should be worn all the time time you are indoors and throughout the night when sleeping.

Your progress will be assessed regularly by your orthodontist every six to eight weeks, but it is still very important for you to attend your own general dentist for regular dental check-ups.

You should be able to speak and eat quite well with your braces after about 4 to 5 days.  Keep them in a rigid box when you are not wearing them as they can be broken quite easily and replacements are very expensive.

What happens if I have problems?

If your brace is broken or uncomfortable, please continue to wear it if possible.  Contact us immediately for an appointment so that it can be adjusted or repaired.
