Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are made up of bands, brackets, archwire and ties that are stuck onto each tooth.  Straightening wires of differing strengths run between the various attachments and the teeth are moved with elastics and/or headgear.  The fixed attachments cannot normally be removed by the patient.

Does the brace have to have so much metal showing?

No.  Ceramic or porcelain brackets can be used making the brace a lot less noticeable. These braces are only available on a private basis.

How long does treatment last?

The length of treatment varies, but rarely exceeds three years.  Fixed braces are generally worn for about two years, followed by at least one year with removable retainers. If you have headgear, this should be worn all the time time you are indoors and throughout the night when sleeping.

Does the Brace hurt?

No, However the braces may feel rough to the inside of your lips and cheeks for the first week.  Soft wax and ulcer cream such as bonjela can be used to ease the initial discomfort.  The teeth will then be tender for a few days after each appointment, and some patients may prefer to take a painkiller.

Caring for your brace

Tooth brushing - The teeth, gums and fixed attachments MUST be kept completely clean.

Plaque and food collects readily around the brace and, if not carefully removed, the gums will swell and bleed, and the teeth may become permanently marked or damaged.

If your gums bleed during treatment it is a sign of inflammation and should be brushed more thoroughly.  Should problems persist we may recommend that you see our private dental hygienist to help you.

We strongly recommend that if you have been referred to Mr Sutton for orthodontic treatment, that you visit your own dentist every 6 months for normal routine dental care whilst undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Inter space and spiral twin toothbrushes should be purchased and daily fluoride mouth rinse is recommended. These are available from our reception.

What can I eat?

Sweets biscuits and fizzy drinks should be avoided or kept for special occasions as a treat.  Hard and sticky foods should not be eaten as they damage the brace.  You are advised to cut up apples, carrots etc, and chewing sweets/toffees are to be avoided. Try not bite into crusty rolls or French bread.  Using a Fluoride mouth rinse helps reduce the risk of permanent damage to your teeth.

Elastics?

Elastic bands, worn between the upper and lower fixed braces are often needed to improve the bite and appearance of the teeth.  Wear your elastics as instructed.  This usually means for 24 hours a day.  Always carry some with you in case they break during the day.  Elastics should only be removed for tooth brushing. If you run out of elastics, please contact the practice.  The elastics should be changed every day.

What happens if I have problems?

Please phone the practice immediately if your brace is broken or loose.  We will normally see you the same day or within 24 hrs.
