Removable Braces
Removable braces are carefully made to fit
your mouth exactly and to straighten your teeth as quickly
as possible. Your brace may feel uncomfortable for about
five days and during this period your speech may be
affected and eating will be difficult. After the
first week these problems should cease.
Compliance
Wear the brace all
the time, including meals, and avoid eating hard or
sticky foods. Your brace should be removed for swimming
and contact sports. Handle the brace carefully
to avoid damaging it or bending any of the wires.
Take the brace out using the clips at the back.
When putting the brace back in, make sure the wires
go into the correct place. If you remove the brace,
place it in a rigid box to avoid it breaking - replacements
are expensive.
Caring for you brace
Take the brace out
and clean it with a toothbrush and toothpaste every
day, and rinse it after meals. Plaque builds up
on your teeth very easily when you are wearing a brace,
so you must clean your teeth and gums well. If
there is a screw in your brace, this should only be
turned as instructed. If you have headgear, this
should be worn all the time you are indoors and through
the night.
How long does treatment
take?
The length of treatment
varies but rarely exceeds 18 months. You will be
seen every 4 to6 weeks by Mr Sutton to have your brace
adjusted. You must still attend your own general
dentist for regular dental check ups.
What happens if I have
problems?
If your brace is broken or uncomfortable
please continue to wear it if possible. Contact us immediately
for an appointment so that it can be adjusted or repaired.
Thank you.
Replacement appliances cost between £45 - £95. You
will have to pay for a replacement if you loose your
brace.
