What are Implants?

If you have missing teeth or loose dentures,
dental implants could be the answer to your prayers.

Our highly experienced implant dentists can permanently replace missing teeth with dental implants that look, feel and work like the real thing. Dental implants are specially designed to match and blend in with your existing teeth and can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or provide a secure anchor for bridges or dentures.

An implant is an artificial root made from titanium that replaces the root of a missing tooth. It can be placed in either the upper or lower jaw and, in time, will bond with your jawbone to create a firm foundation to which a replacement false tooth or denture is fixed. Restore your smile and rebuild your confidence with oral implants that allow you to smile, eat and chew again with absolute confidence.

"It would not be an exaggeration to say that quite literally, the implant-supported denture has changed my life. I cannot remember a time when I have ever been so pleased with the appearance and function of my teeth. I would unconditionally recommend your practice and procedures to anyone – indeed I have done so."

When can teeth implants be used?
Tooth implants can be used for a wide range of treatment from one implant to replace one missing tooth, two implants to secure a loose denture, through to multiple implants to replace all the teeth in the mouth.

Can anyone have oral implants?
Yes, if you are over 18 and in reasonably good health. The main limitation is the amount of bone available. Our thorough assessment will determine whether dental implants are the right option for you.

Do implants hurt?
No. All treatment is carried out under a local anaesthetic and for very nervous patients we can offer dental sedation.

How are dental implants placed?
Dental implant treatment is a minor surgical procedure that involves replacing your missing tooth root with the implant. Dental implants have been used for many years, with excellent success rates.

Once the your new implant has been placed we normally wait around three to six months to allow full healing, then we can place a new tooth. On some cases it is possible to provide a new tooth for you sooner than this using a technique called 'immediate loading'. To find out if this option is suitable for you please discuss this with us when you visit.

How many dental implants will I need?
This depends on how many teeth you have missing. As a general rule we can 'bridge' between implants, so if you have four teeth missing in a row we could place two implants at each end and suspend two teeth between them. If you have no teeth at all, then it is possible to provide a new full set of teeth with just four implants. However it does depend on several factors and only a proper dental implant examination at our Grantham practice will tell us for sure.

What are the added benefits of dental implantology?
When teeth are lost the bone that held them in your jaw will shrink. Placement of dental implants can preserve this bone, maintaining the shape and structure of the lips and cheeks preventing the ageing ‘caved in’ look of older people with dentures.

What kind of implants do you use?
We use Straumann implants, which are backed by more than 30 years of research and development. Our implant dentist, Colin Sutton is an accredited Straumann user and has been placing and restoring dental implants at our practice since 1999.

How much do dental implants cost?
Your investment in dental implant treatment depends on the number of implants and the complexity of your treatment. After a full examination and completion of any special tests, such as x-rays, a detailed estimate will be provided. We are also able to arrange financial packages so that payments can be spread over a number of months or years.

In the long term dental implants will often prove to be the more cost-effective solution to replace missing teeth. Although the outlay of dental implant treatment is high, the benefits to patients are numerous and this makes it worthwhile.
